Morgoth - The Timeless Serpent

A rare and mysterious creature native to the Ethran planes, Morgoth is an Azyrian serpent revered as much for its deadly nature as for its legendary mystical potential. Found primarily in Ethra: The Land of Giants, this creature spends most of its long life in a state of hibernation, emerging only when hunger compels it.

Vampiric by nature, Morgoth hunts through an elegant feeding process. When it encounters prey, it coils its sinuous, feathered body around its victim, inducing a trance-like stupor that leaves the target paralyzed and unaware. Hidden between the soft feathers of its tail is a sharp sting, which it uses to pierce the skin and drain life-giving blood. The feeding is precise and calculated; Morgoth only takes what it requires, leaving its victims weakened but alive. Once satisfied, it releases its prey and retreats to its lair to resume its slumber, awaiting the next cycle of hunger.

Despite its fearsome reputation, the Azyrian serpent is surprisingly adaptable. It thrives both in the wild and when kept as a domestic companion, provided its owner is skilled enough to handle such a dangerous being. According to legend, those who bond with an Azyrian serpent are granted a protector like no other. Morgoth is said to possess the unique ability to absorb its master’s wounds, curses, and illnesses, transferring the afflictions into itself and healing its master from otherwise fatal conditions. This mythical trait has earned the serpent a dual reputation: as both a predator to be feared and a guardian of unparalleled loyalty.

The Azyrians: The Winged Serpent Race

The Azyrian Serpents are a mystical race of winged serpents renowned for their unique powers and deep-rooted connection to the mystical forces of the Ethran Plains. These creatures are as majestic as they are dangerous, capable of forming loyal bonds as companions or posing significant threats as adversaries. With shimmering feathered wings that reflect their innate elemental affinities, Azyrians are revered across various realms for their extraordinary capabilities.

A Race of Power and Diversity

The Warlock Trade Clan, famed for its knowledge of rare and magical species, has cataloged numerous Azyrian subspecies. These records reveal the diversity within the race, each species boasting its own elemental mastery. Some Azyrians have been documented as elementalists, able to manipulate key natural forces:

  • Hydroscale Azyrians: Serpents capable of controlling water currents and conjuring storms.

  • Inferno Azyrians: Fire-wielding serpents, often known to glow with an inner flame and ignite the air around them.

  • Zephyrian Azyrians: Masters of wind and air, they can create gusts strong enough to topple trees or carry themselves effortlessly through the skies.

  • Terran Azyrians: Earthbound and powerful, these serpents can manipulate the soil and summon tremors beneath their victims.

Rare and Mystic Abilities

Beyond elemental manipulation, certain rare Azyrians exhibit powers of an even higher order. Among them are serpents gifted with:

  • Telekinesis: These serpents can move objects and enemies without physical contact, making them deadly opponents from a distance.

  • Wielders of Dark Energy: This rare category is known for its connection to shadow magic and dark forces, capable of sapping life energy, creating illusions, and inducing fear within enemies.

Guardians or Foes

Despite their potential danger, Azyrians are also valued as loyal protectors. Their adaptability allows them to thrive in various environments, and their intelligence makes them ideal companions for those skilled enough to earn their trust. In ancient Ethran lore, some heroes were known to have bonded with these creatures, gaining both protection and access to their mystical abilities. However, failing to respect the serpent’s nature has led many to tragic ends, as an Azyrian scorned will not hesitate to unleash its full power.

Xhil'ethan: The Serpent King

In the heart of the Ethran Plains lies a sanctuary of power and mystery—the central Azyrian Nest, where the legendary Xhil'ethan, the Serpent King, stands as its eternal guardian. Known as the only Azyrian serpent capable of wielding dark energy, Xhil'ethan’s power is feared and respected by all who live within the region, and his very presence is woven into the myths and traditions of the Ethran people.

A King Who Grants Favor

Xhil'ethan’s reputation extends beyond his role as a protector—he is also a gatekeeper for those seeking to bond with the powerful Azyrian serpents. Only beings capable of wielding magic are permitted to request an audience with the Serpent King, and even then, they must offer something of significant value. The most coveted offering is a dark Ethran crystal, a rare and potent gemstone found only in the dangerous caverns of the Ethran Plains. These crystals are essential to Xhil'ethan’s sustenance, as they fuel his dark magic and maintain his longevity.

The Ethran Trials

To obtain an Azyrian egg, a Warlock or magical Ethran civilian must first complete the Ethran Trials, a series of perilous tests designed to prove their worth and resilience. These trials include:

  • The Test of Endurance: Crossing the shifting dunes of Ethra while enduring extreme magical disruptions and mirages.

  • The Trial of the Obsidian Maze: Navigating a maze filled with magical traps and shadow beasts.

  • The Crystal Cavern Challenge: Retrieving a dark Ethran crystal from the heart of a maze-like cavern, guarded by territorial creatures.

Once the trials are completed and the offering is presented, Xhil'ethan evaluates the seeker’s intentions. Should they be found honorable, the Serpent King will grant them an Azyrian egg—a gift that is both a blessing and a responsibility, for raising an Azyrian serpent demands discipline, magic, and unwavering loyalty.

The Legend of Xhil'ethan’s Origin

Ancient Ethran folklore suggests that Xhil'ethan was not always the dark guardian of the nest. It is said that he was once an ordinary Azyrian serpent, marked by his ability to control the winds. However, during a catastrophic battle between rival magical clans, Xhil'ethan absorbed the energy of a cursed artifact, transforming him into the only dark energy wielder of his kind. While many feared his transformation, the Azyrian council recognized his newfound strength and granted him the title of Serpent King, entrusting him with the nest’s protection for eternity.

A Deal Bound by Magic

Any Warlock or civilian who receives an Azyrian egg does so under a magical bond. The egg must be nurtured with care and respect. Should the guardian neglect or abuse the serpent, Xhil'ethan will sense the violation of the bond and summon the offender back to the Ethran Plains—often never to be heard from again.

Thus, the legend of Xhil'ethan endures as both a cautionary tale and a symbol of hope for those brave enough to seek his favor, for in the heart of darkness lies the promise of unmatched power.
